Hospital Broadcasting Awards

Hospital Radio Hillingdon, a hospital radio station run completely by volunteers is pleased to be attending this year's Hospital Broadcasting Awards ceremony. The ceremony is an annual celebration of the dedication and excellent standards found in hospital radio stations across the country.

The awards ceremony this year will be held at the Ramada Hotel in Hollingbourne, near Maidstone Kent on Saturday 26th March and it will be a memorable event as 2011 marks the 85th anniversary of hospital radio launching in the UK. It is also a special year for Hospital Radio Hillingdon as the station is celebrating its 40th anniversary and we are therefore delighted to be short listed in the category of 'Best Station Promotion' at this year's ceremony. This award recognises the technical ability and hard work that goes into making a station promotion or programme trailer. Steve Hickman Chairman of Hospital Radio Hillingdon said 'I am very happy that we have been nominated for this award especially in our 40th Anniversary year. I will be keeping all my fingers and toes crossed!'

Time, dedication and fundraising are the main reasons why Hospital Radio Hillingdon is celebrating its 40th Anniversary, an achievement which our volunteers are extremely proud of. If you would like to help support the station then why not come to one of our fundraising events. Our next event will be a Race Night held on Friday 11th March at Hayes Cricket Club. The evening will start at 7.30pm and it promises to be a fun filled evening with all proceeds going to the station. National Hospital Broadcasting Week

The Hospital Broadcasting Awards ceremony takes place from the 25th to the 27th March and this is not only an exciting time as Radio Hillingdon have been nominated for an award but this ceremony also marks the start of National Hospital Broadcasting week. National Hospital Broadcasting week runs from Sunday 27th March until Saturday 2 April and during this week Hospital Radio Stations up and down the country will celebrate the work their volunteers do for the patients of their Hospitals 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Throughout this week, Radio Hillingdon will be holding an information stall in the main entrance of Hillingdon Hospital. Our volunteers will be manning the stand so come along and see us to find out about the station, our fundraising activities and the service we provide to the hospital. We will also have speakers at the stand where you can hear a broadcast from the station and perhaps request a song to be played for a patient in the hospital. Why not also find out how you too can become a volunteer at the station, which is both a fun and very rewarding role. If you are unable to visit us at the hospital during this week then come to see us at our stall in the Pavilions Shopping centre on Saturday 2nd April. (This is to be confirmed).

During this week make sure you also tune in to Hospital Radio Hillingdon through our website www.radiohillingdon.com as Steve Hickman, Chairman of Radio Hillingdon will be interviewing Mrs June Snowden, the President of the Hospital Broadcasting Association during his More Music breakfast show. Mrs Snowden's role as president means that she attends many events and fundraising activities held by Hospital radio stations across the UK so this will be a very interesting interview and will give a great insight into the work of hospital radio volunteers across the UK.

Hillingdon's Mayor becomes a DJ for the night

On Monday 11th April 2011 the Worshipful Mayor, Cllr David Yarrow attended Hillingdon Hospital to pay a visit to its very own radio station, Hospital Radio Hillingdon.

During his visit the Mayor presented a cheque for £1000 on behalf of the radio station to the Hillingdon Hospital Cherubs Charity. A charity which was created by and for the parents of babies on the neonatal unit at The Hillingdon Hospital. The Cherubs group aims to provide information and support to parents. They also raise money for the neonatal unit (with an emphasis on improving the experience of parents). At the Hillingdon Hospital, there are approximately 4000 births each year. The majority of these babies are well, however about 400 will need to be admitted to the neonatal unit due to some kind of difficulty. For parents, this can be a very stressful time. The money was raised by Radio Hillingdon's volunteers during its sponsored 100 hour Broadcast Marathon in September last year. An event where 10 Radio Hillingdon volunteers broadcasted live around the clock for 25 hours each, making up a total of 100 hours. The event was a huge success and Radio Hillingdon raised around £4000. So the generous volunteers decided to share its success by donating £1000 to the Cherubs Charity.

During the visit The Mayor was also let in on the secrets of how Radio Hillingdon broadcasts 24 hours a day thanks to the use of technology and he was given a tour of the studio complex. He also had the chance to try his hand at being a DJ himself when he presented the cheque live on the radio during Radio Hillingdon's nightly Patients Request show. He also recorded a Get well soon message which will be played at regular intervals to the patients.

Hospital Radio Hillingdon is a registered charity no. 264132, run entirely by volunteers. We do not receive funding and we survive solely from the fund-raising efforts of our members. Who organise events such as Quiz nights, Road Shows, Bazaars and Broadcast Marathons. We broadcast around the clock 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year, on channel 45 of the patients' bedside Hospedia terminals and on line at www.radiohillingdon.com.

Steve Hickman Chairman said, "We have worked with the Cherubs on many occasions and are always keen to support the great work they do. It's especially nice to be able to raise such a large amount during our 40th Anniversary year. I am extremely proud of the hard work of everyone involved".
